first week jitters

ok, overall 4 out of 10. which is actually pretty good i hear for first year teachers, especially 'don't-have-summer-time-to-set-up, already-into-the-school-year, new-hire, first-year teachers'.

first day i went in at 7am and stayed til 730pm decorating and setting up my classroom. it's pretty big.

it was a 'baptism by fire' kind of experience as they like to call it. they gave me the one key and told me ta go saddle up my horse. i was on my own. made up the whole first class lesson, but surprisingly it went so well i repeated the lesson 8 more times that day.

9 classes a day. 40 min a class. minus the kindergartners who get 25 min. 4 days a week, so that's 36 classes a week, and 900 student's names to remember and personalities to master.

oh the things students say:

"teacher, teacher"
"are you married?"
"are you like... in high school?"
"you're not married? well, when will you be married?" [i thought i got away from that when i left rexburg...]
"can i go to the bathroom?" [pants already soaked]
"can we watch the incredibles intstead?"
"how old are you?"
"do you have a boyfriend?"
"my mom says i have the best voice in the world" [stands up and sings the star-spangled banner]
"what's your real name?"
"hi new music teacher! look, its the new music teacher, new music teacher, i have a question," etc. apparently my last name is very hard to both remember and pronounce.
"you're my favorite teacher in the whole world" [said the little 1st grader 30 seconds into class... talk about easy to please] (:
"will you marry me?" [spread around the entire grade within 2 hours.]

now on to lesson planning!

  2. Well I'm glad you had a good first week. You are going to be a GREAT teacher and probably their "favorite teacher in the whole world". I can't wait to hear all of your teaching stories. I love you!
